  • stand by
    1. be ready for action:
      • Emergency crews are standing by in the case of electrical outages.
      • Stand by to welcome us back.
    2. continue to support some earlier decision, promise, or statement:
      • I think you should stand by your father's decision.
    3. also stand aside: remain unmoved; do not take part:
      • Don't just stand by, or else you are to be the next.
  • stand in for somebody
    1. replace somebody (for a while):
      • I can stand in for you.
